Great Northern has been running in Grande Prairie since 1999, which makes it one of the longer-serving casino floors in Alberta and by far the most established in the Peace Country. For a region 450 kilometres northwest of Edmonton, that continuity matters more than any single feature of the building.
It holds a 3.9 rating, though from only 185 Google reviewers — the thinnest sample of any sizeable Alberta casino, and a reminder of how few people live within an easy drive.
The floor
30,000 square feet carrying 419 gaming machines and sixteen table and poker games combined.
Four hundred machines is a real floor rather than a lounge, and sixteen tables is generous for a city of 65,000. Grande Prairie is an oil-and-gas town with money moving through it, and the room is built for that rather than for tourists.
The table-and-poker figure being quoted as one number is worth flagging: the split between pit games and poker shifts with demand, so how many poker tables are actually running on a given night varies. Call ahead if cards are the reason you are going.
Hotel and restaurants
A 123-room hotel on site, and three restaurants — an unusually complete offering for a northern Alberta property and more dining than most rooms twice its size in Edmonton.
For anyone working in the Peace Country or driving the Alaska Highway route, that combination makes it a practical overnight rather than just a night out.
Hours
9:30am to 3:00am Sunday through Thursday, extending to 4:00am Friday and Saturday.
Getting there
10910 107 Avenue, Grande Prairie, with free parking. That is about five hours northwest of Edmonton, and it is the northernmost substantial casino in Alberta apart from Rivers in Fort McMurray.
Nobody drives here to gamble. Everyone who plays here already lives or works in the region, and the room is sized and priced accordingly.
Ownership has changed hands
Great Northern was long a Gamehost Inc. property, the Alberta operator that also ran Deerfoot Inn & Casino in Calgary and Rivers in Fort McMurray. In March 2026 Gamehost's Alberta casinos were acquired by Indigenous Gaming Partners and Pure Casino Entertainment, the same group that had bought the Pure chain in December 2024 — consolidating a large share of Alberta's commercial gaming under First Nations ownership.
How Alberta casinos work
Licensed non-profits conduct the casino events themselves here, as everywhere in the province, and are assigned to the facility serving their casino region. In the Peace Country that region is enormous and the pool of charities small, which means local groups come round more often than their city equivalents — a rare advantage of a thin population.
Worth it?
For Grande Prairie and the Peace Country, yes, and there is no second option worth considering. Four hundred machines, sixteen tables, three restaurants and a hotel is a complete property, and it has been reliable for a quarter-century.
For anyone else, this is not a destination. It is five hours from Edmonton and the floor is a third the size of what you would find there.
